AUC Commissioner for Economic Affairs Prof. Victor Harison and Tunisian Minister of Foreign of Affairs sign the Host Agreement for the African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC) on the margins of the 30th AU Summit
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 02 February 2018:- Following the adoption in January 2013 by Heads of State of the decision to establish the African Union Institute for Statistics, Prof. Victor Harison, Commissioner of Economic Affairs of AUC and Mr. Khemaies Jhinaoui, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tunisia proceeded with the signature of a Host Agreement for the African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC), on 28 January 2018, on the margins of the 30th AU Heads of State and Governments Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The signing ceremony was a symbolic event showcasing the commitment of both parties to enhance the continued efforts to contribute to the development agenda of the continent.
STATAFRIC, which will be based in Tunis, Tunisia, has an objective to become “The African Statistics Institute of reference” for the continent. Its main purpose will be to generate timely, reliable and harmonised statistical information, covering all aspects of political, economic, social and cultural integration for Africa; identify specific statistical data related to all AU and its Organs’ activities, formulate policies for statistical development and capacity building for the AU and its member states; coordinate the implementation of the African Charter on Statistics as regulatory continental framework for statistics development and capacities building of members of the African Statistics System; coordinate the implementation of a Statistical Peer Review Mechanism of the African Charter on Statistics in collaboration with partners; and coordinate the implementation of the Strategy for the Harmonisation of Statistics in Africa (SHaSA 2) and its follow ups.
Worth noting that, the Government of the Republic of Tunisia has made available to the Commission the premises of the Institute which will be based in Tunis, as well as the office equipment and other operational elements.
